Bo Bites – Barrio Cafe

(Lyrics – Fugees – Ready Or Not)

Ready or not, here I come, you can’t hide
Gonna find…. you Barrio Cafe
Ready or not, here I come, you can’t hide
Gonna find…. you Barrio Cafe

Now that I need a taste, Bo Bites awake
Those who could relate know Barrios the place
Tacos with grilled skirt steak
Special drinks, they make
When they meet their margarita mate

If I could rule Phoenix
Everyone would have to come at Calle 16 of course
With pomegranite on their Guac
I kick a rhyme eating tortas

I pour a sip on my palates, for the review
But no don’t weep, Chef Esparza’s in a state to keep
Thinking about the Elote that I had last week
Sopas on the plate, Yelpers looked for some swag
I want to eat with Mexicans from here to Tucson

I have to share my love of Barrio Cafe!

I’ve been to the Barrio Queen and Urbana, but this is my first run at the Cafe. It had a more mom/pop feel and very homey compared to the more invested restaurants around town. I wish they would have kept that feeling, but then again it’s what makes Barrio Cafe so appealing.

I brought my friend from out of town to Barrio Cafe on a Saturday afternoon. They had live music and the place was pretty busy.

We started off with some guacamole which famously introduced to me with tableside preparation and also the inclusion of pomegranate. Still the best in town for sure! For my entree I shot for their famous Cochinita Pibil, but taco style. My friends ordered the Pescado Taco and Mole Enchiladas. Overall, my marinated pork tacos definitely had some special love to it. Warm to the bite and the pork was like butter and definitely been soaking in the achiote sauce for quite a bit of time. The fish tacos were crunchy from the breading and the cabbage while the subtle bite of the avocado helped mellow it out from the aioli. The mole had a strong cocoa taste, but mixed well the bland corn tortilla wrapped chicken giving a much needed flavor pop!

In the end, Barrio Cafe was voted best Mexican restaurant in the country for a reason. It’s local fare and alluring arts is well worth it as it sits in the heart of Phoenix. – Enjoy!
