Featured Artist - Victor Crisostomo Gomez

These compelling images blend tradition with a contemporary edge. The dichotomy of past and present would normally be difficult and prohibitively complex, however, Victor, a Native American of Inca Qechua heritage, effortlessly bridges the two extremes while traveling the jungles of South America for his research and inspiration.

Completely self-taught, Victor’s approach to art is to portray emotion through intense color and to render the men, women and children in his portraits with a soft, almost dream-like quality. The result is that each painting becomes a beautiful exploration into symbolism, cultural heritage and identity, drawing on a sense of harmony that he tries to instill in each canvas. Victor’s work has been likened to a treasure chest full of mysteries and surprises. Each gem will be revealed the longer you look.

Ultimately, Victor seeks to combine the strength and richness of the heritage of the Native Indians of Peru with the rewards and challenges of the urban world. In this way, Victor has become one of today’s most relevant South American portrait artists. He continues to create beautiful paintings in Peru.

AZC:

What motivated you to get started as an artist?

Victor:

Our wonderful existence, the freedom of choosing the infinite ways, like the universe, full of roads to follow.

AZC:

What type of things inspires you and what material do you use in the development of your works?

Victor:

The nature as a life’s singing and expectation, every bit of our holy mother land, every ephemeral instant from the dawn to the infinite night of stars.

The ideas sometimes come alone from what we have in our subconscious, something that is acquiring shape and ends in something concrete, it can be an artistic creation. An idea is born from the observation about all around us, the nature, from a deep, creative and clever a glance with flight, a free glance. The inspiration is the reason what makes me paint without asking me why, how or the will to sit in from of a white canvas with the certainty that soon it will become an Art work.

The drawing is always the preliminary step to do a picture on several occasions I mix diverse techniques like oil over acrylic on the cloth. Besides in general I apply many layers in different vibrant colors that give the final color. Every process in my picture is experimental.

AZC:

How would you categorize your art?

Victor:

Between ethnic, ancestral and modern. I would call it A contemporary pro-Indian movement.

AZC:

Will you share a secret about your art that identifies and brands your work?

Victor:

My work  arise from the life that is around me. The life/picture happens like an inevitable determination. My intention when I imagine a work is that happens in an unavoidable and fluid relation between bottom and shape I mean between how and what? It’s a unique act without sequence to think about the feeling and feel the though. My work is fluctuating reason and emotion On the other hand the source, where the inspiration proceeds, starts the creative impulse, it can be the most amazing and unexpected thing sometimes you recognize at first sight, but in other occasions it stays hidden and it belongs to the life mystery.  In certain cases even the author doesn’t know or he is aware of this when the work is done I’m a painter, I’ve dedicated to study different languages of the sensitive relations, the colors, the shapes, the sizes, etc.

The creativity comes when there are new meanings in shapes, colors one and others have own life they are related and create new worlds, they vibrate and get us, make us feel that truth that shake us, this is what Art makes.

What is the funniest thing that has ever happened to you while being observed developing or presenting a piece?

Victor:

I don’t feel emotion when I see my work on show. The true emotion I feel in my studio in the process of the work when there’s a coincidence between what the work requires to be itself and what I feel it will express.

AZC:

What advice would you give someone just starting up in your profession?

Victor:

The most important and valuable thing is vocation, patience, dedication, and not give up before obstacles. The recognition comes along and don’t forget that in every work you send messages of faith, expectation, never stop dreaming, don’t let you influence by what publicity orders, thinking about positive ideas that you can achieve what you want one day people  will appreciate like an artist and you work will be in Art Galleries.

AZC:

What’s the most difficult aspect of trying to make it in your profession?

Victor:

In this globalize world nothing seems to be difficult beside there are new challenges. I believe in the fact that I can come in the market that is more competitive, not only in Art but in all sense to share and show our work. I hope one day Latin America and world realize the great artistic inheritance that our ancestors left us.

Anything that you would like to tell the world?

Victor:

Any kind of expression in its different ways puts us in touch with our interior being.  Letting out that vital energy to share with others it’s a ways to spread and communicate that sometimes opens unsuspected doors. Art must be to everyone and must be within everyone’s reach.
