Phoenix Art Community Rallies Around Laura Dragon

In 2012, Laura Dragon founded {9} The Gallery on Grand Avenue in Phoenix. She has helped many notable Phoenix artists get their start. More recently, Laura co-founded studio and gallery, Grand ArtHaus. Her combined efforts have been instrumental in building the Downtown Phoenix art scene. {9} The Gallery and Grand ArtHaus have been steadfast anchors on Grand Avenue, helping to expand the radius of Phoenix art outside of Roosevelt Row.

When Laura Dragon announced that she had Cancer in April, it was a shock to many of us. We had to watch our friend step into the ring for the fight of her life. It seemed impossible that this vibrant person who has done so much for the Downtown Phoenix Art Scene could be facing such a foe.

Yet, even as she faces such a struggle, she continues to do what she has always done – rally community.

Almost immediately, we began to see artists come together and support the person who has supported them for so long. On the Third Friday of May, 2017, 15 artists contributed their work to the Ice House for a 100% auction benefit with all proceeds donated to Laura.

Last night, First Friday of June, 2017, marked the 5 year anniversary of {9} The Gallery. In light of Laura’s fight, over 50 artists contributed their work to a very special show at {9} The Gallery – Heart of the Dragon. 100% of all proceeds were donated to Laura to help offset her medical bills and to help with the future of {9} The Gallery.

The gallery was PACKED! And it wasn’t only the artists who came out. Supporters of all types came to bid on the donated artwork. Our community showed up in force to let Laura Dragon know that she is not alone.

Even in the face of her toughest challenge, Laura has inspired us to support each other.

Warren is our fearless leader, the founder of AZ Culture and the glue that holds our team together. After moving to the great state of Arizona from his native Boston, he just wanted to find a place to listen to jazz. With that, AZ Culture was born (If you want the extended version of that story you’ll have to ask him). He is avid lover of the arts, although he himself has said that he has the artistic ability of a stone. Warren is an entrepreneur at heart, and hopes to apply this to build a stronger community while giving artists of all kinds a platform to showcase their talents.
